Dr. Stavroula Foteinopoulou is a postdoctoral Researcher at the Theoretical and Computational Division in the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL), Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH). She received her B.S. degree in Physics from University of Patras, Greece, in 1995, and the M.S. in Physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY in 1997. She obtained her Ph. D. degree in Condensed Matter Physics with honors (research excellence award) from Iowa State University in December 2003. She had also worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Laboratory of Solid State Physics of Namur University, in Belgium. Her research encompasses the theoretical study of photonic crystals, left-handed metamaterials and plasmonic nanostructures. She has long time experience in many numerical techniques pertinent to the modelling of such systems. Amongst her current research are the manipulation of surface plasmon polaritons in photonic crystals surfaces, and non-linear optical phenomena in magnetic and left-handed metamaterials. She has 10 publications in refereed international journals, and is also a member of the American Physical Society (APS).
